Forest Restoration & Establishment
As a result of his early years as a builder, using wood indiscriminately, Lurie is a fervent forest restorationist.
He has been planting thousands of trees per year since 1989; 46,000 alone on the Mad River in Humboldt County,
not to mention on dozens of sites in the US and Mexico. In early 2005, Lurie was granted permission to plant a forest park behind the tiny Mexican town
of Col. Esteban Cantu in Northern Baja CA, just south of Ensenada. His goal there is to create a living example of how a small forest can unite a town, provide a ”lung”,
and change the children's view of how the future world will be... with their support. Lurie is working with the Environmental Studies Dept at the University Of Ensenda
to examine the impact of his forest on the local flora and fauna. Again, it is Lurie's hope that the people will recognize how one person's efforts
can have a wide ranging impact on our world and that this is within every person's grasp. On a smaller scale, Lurie wonders if each of us planted only one tree per year
and cared for it, how much better a chance we'd have...
