The Dome

The dome structure in the images below is being constructed... better yet sculpted, using a combination of sustainable building techniques; a true hybrid. It will be primarily three domes, two being formed with compacted adobe filled earth bags, based on the research of Nadir Kahlili an Iranian architect. (see www.calearth.org.) An important part of Lurie's eco-awareness; this studio utilizes the surrounding earth as its main construction material, and woods used are all recycled. Additions in ferro cement, the on-site rock, and cob, with structural trees built from concrete; enhance the livability of this unique studio guesthouse. The adjacent acreage is being developed in an environmentally friendly and thoughtfully landscaped manner, with a focus on proving the variety of draught tolerant trees which can be grown on this north facing protected micro-climate. This photo gallery will evolve as the building and treescape progress.

Update: Oct 22, 2007 - A wildfire raged across the Punta Banda ridge, destroying many homes. As Mark was inspecting pockets of fire in the hills above his dome property, the wind shifted dramatically, sending the flames down the ridge and valley, threatening the town below. Just as the fire was reaching the first homes, the wind shifted once again, saving the town. Mark did not fare as well, as the fire decimated his beloved trees. Luckily, the dome was not affected; a good test of the building materials. See the photos below, beginning at row 6 and titled Fire Photos.

Update: March 24, 2008 - Five months after the fire that destroyed the forest, Mark is well under way with the renaissance. See the photos beginning at row 8 and titled The Renaissance
